Nato ad Aparecida, San Paolo nell’ottobre 1955. Pittore, disegnatore, illustratore, scrittore, scultore, restauratore e docente di Belle Arti. Iniziò nel campo artistico nel 1968, quando era uno studente del rinomato scultore Teixeira Machado. Anche in quel momento, Gilberto ha vissuto con i pittori di alto livello come Theodoro Meirelles, José Roberto Santos, Chico Santeiro e Oswaldo Teixeira. In seguito a Bahia, dove ha vissuto per 14 anni, ha partecipato agli workshop di grandi artisti come Karl Heins Hansen Bahia, João José Rescala, Carlos Bastos, Carybé e Rainer, dove Gilberto ha avuto l’opportunità di assorbire tecniche specifiche per migliorare il suo lavoro. In seguito, è stato invitato a tenere una conferenza e divenne un professore presso l’Università Federale di Bahia e Università di Stato di Feira de Santana, dove ha insegnato tecniche di pittura e di disegno. Ha partecipato a diverse mostre in Brasile e all’estero, appartenenti a importanti Enti Culturali brasiliani, come l’Associazione Paulista delle Belle Arti e della Società Brasiliana di Belle Arti. Egli è il detentore di premi in mostre e saloni d’arte in Brasile e all’estero, avendo tra gli altri, Medaglia d’oro, Medal of Honor, Menzione d’onore e medaglia Commendation, essendo uno dei più importanti artisti brasiliani al giorno d’oggi. Nel 2006, dopo aver completato 30 anni di carriera, l’artista ha pubblicato la sua biografia e le opere inserite nel libro “L’ARTE DI GILBERTO GOMES” di Alexandre Lourenço Marcos Barbosa, Editore Nova America, San Paolo, come parte di una serie di libri sulla grande brasiliano Artisti come Portinari, Tarsila do Amaral, Di Cavalcanti, Adelio Sarro, Cláudio Tozzi, Antonio Peticov, Guignard, Djanira, e Brecheret. Artista di vasta e legittimo fama nazionale e internazionale, avendo il suo lavoro catalogato in una vasta gamma di pubblicazioni e Arti Dizionari. L’artista ha opere in collezioni private e archivi in più di trenta paesi, mettendo in evidenza il Palazzo Presidenziale a Brasilia, Università Federale di Saragozza – Spagna, Banco Bradesco – New York, Banca del Brasile – Leningrado Fondazione Culturale Monaco di Baviera – Germania, Ambasciata del Brasile – Argentina , Atelier del pittore americano Gregory Gallo – New York, Museo Regionale di Feira de Santana, Brasile, Stati Uniti Associazione Culturale a Salvador, tra le altre collezioni. Egli è l’autore della famosa opera “Frei Galvão, Santo della nostra terra”. L’immagine è stata scelta dalla Chiesa cattolica (dal precedente papa Joseph Ratzinger) come l’immagine ufficiale del primo santo brasiliano, Frei Antônio Galvão de Santana (aka Frei Galvão).
